About the Event

Location:  Cat Mountain (In Tucson Mountain Park)

Courses:  There will be three courses to choose from: a Beginner/Yellow course, a Short Advanced (Orange to Brown) course, and a Long Advanced (Red) course. The Beginner course will allow for mostly following trails, but also provide some opportunities for off-trail adventure for those seeking to test themselves. The Short and Long Advanced courses are set to test your technical skills. Think you’re the cat’s meow? Come and show us! But beware, this kitty’s got claws =^-.-^= hiss

Approximate Course Distances:

Beginner – 3.2km

Short Advanced – 3.5km

Long Advanced – 5.1km

Map:  Maps are provided. 1/10k

Schedule:

* There is a 20 minute walk to start.  Walk route map.

7:30 - 8:30 Check in

8:00 Free Beginner's clinic (at the start! 20 min walk from parking)

8:00 First chance to start

8:15 Free "How to use a compass" clinic (at the start! 20 min walk from parking)

9:00 Last chance to start

10:30 Courses close and control retrieval begins

Registration: Pre-registration is required in order to keep an eye on crowd size and prepare the right number of maps. See who has already signed up. Registration closes at 10pm on the 17th.

Directions and Parking:  Sarasota Trailhead. From Tucson, take I-19 South to Ajo Way, then head west on Ajo to Kinney, take a right (north) on Kinney to Sarasota, then head right (northeast) on Sarasota to the trailhead. There is a smallish parking lot at the trailhead and more parking in dirt lots nearby.   Parking.  Directions. Please note that there is no water and there are no restrooms at this location!

What to Bring:

  • Safety whistle is required (whistles can be purchased on site for $1)
  • Compass (compass can be rented on site for $1)
  • Water (and snacks if desired)
  • Watch or phone (so you can finish on time)

E-punch:  This event uses e-punching for timing and punch verification. We'll show you how to use it if you've never done it before and we'll have e-punch sticks for rent ($2) if you do not have your own.

Fees:

  • Adults: $8 (member), $12 (non-member)
  • Juniors (11-20): $6
  • Kids (0-10): free w/adult

Coupon Codes to use at Registration:

  • "AZClub" for adult members of TSN (Tucson) or GPHXO (Phoenix)
  • "Junior" for juniors 11-20.
  • "KID" for children 10 and under (please register even though it's free—we need a headcount and a waiver for each participant).

Youth Participants: All participants under 18 must provide a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian. For details see our Instructions for Minors.  These instructions are for anyone who will be bringing a minor child under 18 to an event.

Safety Information: To ensure that all are safe, everyone, whether finished with the course or not, must check in formally at Start/Finish before courses close and before leaving the event site.
