About the Event
Greasewood Park Novice/Intermediate/Advanced Saturday March 18, 2023. Come take advantage of one of the last cool days before the heat sets in. The high should be 73 in the afternoon, so it should still be in the 60’s on the course.
Location: Greasewood Park
Courses: There are two choices:
- Novice/Intermediate Score-O. There will be a variety of controls ranging from novice to intermediate. Time limit 90 minutes, with penalty for each minute overtime. You can go to as many or as few as you wish, in any order, as long as you are back in 90 minutes. A good intermediate orienteer could get all the controls in 90 minutes if they walk fast or walk/jog, navigate efficiently, and make no serious errors. A novice orienteer could get most of the controls that are near trails.
- Advanced Point-Point 5.2 k “Contours-Only”. The trails will be removed from the map so all you will have is contours and some point features with which to navigate. This map will have the same controls as the Score-O, but the legs are more navigationally difficult and must be done in order. Advanced Explorer: If you sign up for advanced but for whatever reason do not get all the controls, you will automatically be put on the “Advanced Explorer” course. You will get one point for each control you visit. So if you are someone who is moving up from intermediate to advanced, or if you are advanced but do more walking than running, I encourage you to sign up for advanced and give it a shot. The legs are much more challenging than the Score-O.
Maps: The Greasewood map is highly detailed at 1/5000 scale with 4 foot contours. Unlike Ironwood there is plenty of contour information. The slopes are gentle with no steep climbs. It is about ½ mile square and bounded by roads on three sides and a neighborhood on one side, so it is very safe for novices. Descriptions will be printed on the map. Maps will be provided to all participants at the event site.
