About the Event

This event has been postponed due to the road conditions! Stay tuned for updates on this event.

Drive down scenic State Route 83 to the hilly desert grasslands of the Santa Rita Mountains.

This event is being run by and is a fundraiser for members of the University of Arizona orienteering team, who plan to compete at Junior Nationals this March. Proceeds and donations from this event will help offset the travel costs to get to Washington state for the six athletes competing this year.

*** Getting to this event site passes by a Border Patrol checkpoint. If you are not a U.S. Citizen, you must bring a valid I.D. Even if you are a citizen, it is a good idea to bring a valid government issued I.D. ***

*** Getting to this event site requires driving on unpaved dirt roads. Sedans can make it but should drive more carefully and slowly***

Location: Kentucky Camp Area along Route 83 in the Santa Rita Foothills

Courses:  Classic (point-to-point) orienteering courses set in the foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains. This terrain is very hilly, mixed in with juniper, oak, and manzanita filled grasslands. The yellow /beginner course (about 3km) will follow streambeds and well defined paths. Both the orange/intermediate and short advanced/brown the course will be about 4km. The advanced long/red course will be about 5.7 km.

Maps:  1:10000 scale with 5m contour interval. Maps will be provided to all participants at the event site.

Training: UA team members are offering pre-run route planning help for anyone on the Yellow or Orange courses, and post-run course review for runners on any course.

In addition, all orienteers are welcome to stay for a map hike with an experienced orienteer as part of control retrieval, beginning at 2pm. This is a great way to improve your contour interpretation skills in a hands-on way!

  • 9:45am- Free beginners’ clinic starts.  Please arrive 15 minutes early if you wish to attend.
