About the Event
On Sunday April 2, 2023 there will be Score-O at Udall Park. The park is a popular eastside destination at the intersection of Tanque Verde and Sabino Canyon Rd. The course is appropriate for all skill levels, from beginner to advanced.
Score-O: You can visit any or all of the approximately 30 controls as long as you are back within 90 minutes. You are not required to visit all the controls, so you can go as fast or as slow as you wish. I recommend that beginners and novices focus on the developed north half of the map. For advanced competitors, distance to get all the controls will be about 4.5k.
Time Limit 90 minutes: There will be a stiff point penalty if you come in overtime.
Clues instead of Punches: Instead of control markers and punches, at each control circle your clue sheet will ask a question. All you need to do is circle the correct answer based on the clue. There will be no riddles or tricks, the correct answer will be obvious if you are at the control.
Map: The map will be a USGS orthophoto (similar to an aerial photograph). The northern part of the park is developed with ball fields, paved paths, structures, etc. The southern part of the map is open desert area. This desert area is mostly flat but does have several small ravines in one corner, and there is a network of indistinct trails-of-use which are visible on the orthophoto. Most controls are on or near one of those trails. Scale 1/4500.
Directions and Parking: Enter the park at the west entrance off Sabino Canyon Road. Start will be at a picnic table on your left just after you enter the park, just south of the beach volleyball courts near Ramada 6. There is some parking near the start, and more within 200 meters. See parking map.
