What an action-packed weekend at Catalina State Park!
On Saturday the club hosted a Youth Training Day, with an entire morning devoted to getting kids out on orienteering courses. We had 51 young orienteers participate, with many of them running three or four courses! Volunteers for this event were Nicole Traicoff (course designer), KrisAnn Traicoff, Cristina Luis, Donald Traicoff, Annie King, Isaac Pimienta, Alan Craig, Peg Davis, Billie Lubis, Melissa Trout, and Lukas Luis.
Sunday it was time for all those volunteers to have fun, with classic courses for all. Newcomers and novices had 9 courses to choose from, thanks to the previous day’s activities, and many of those folks chose to run two courses for twice the fun! Unfortunately, the long advanced and explorer courses were affected by a missing control (130, #3 on the long advanced course). Several runners spent a lot of time trying to find it, and the experience left many frustrated or short on time, so take the long advanced results with a giant grain of salt! The control, stand, and e-punch unit have not been found and are presumed stolen, lessening my faith in humanity.
The other courses feature standout performances by first-timers Chase and Stephen Woodall, as well as Carrie Rucker. Both Marcy Beard and Jason Poole managed to visit all 39 controls on the Explorer Course (well, 38 plus a boulder where control 130 should have been).
Big thanks to Betsy Lubis (registration), Wayne Lubis (starts), Peg Davis (beginner’s clinic), Melissa Trout (registration/finish), Donald Traicoff and Sasha Savine for lugging equipment, and Annie King for anything I needed, including drawing in a boulder on all of the advanced course maps. Control pickup was handled by John and Marcy Beard, Michelle Edwards and David Edmeades, John Little, Joan D’Alonzo, and Annie King.
