About the Event

Welcome the New Year with Orienteering at Ironwood!

Location:  Ironwood Picnic Area in Tucson Mountain Park.

Courses:  A 2-hour Score-O has been set with both novice and seasoned orienteers in mind.  The Score-O format allows you to choose your own adventure- which controls to visit, in whatever order you determine and what route you will use to arrive at the control. Scenic and interesting areas are highlighted by eighteen pin-punch controls of varying point values. The desert in this location is very runnable, although leg protection would be advisable in a few brushy spots. As you travel through the desert, you may spot evidence of Arizona's mining history or the area's first inhabitants. The objective is to maximize the point total obtained within the two hour course time limit.  Late arrivals will be penalized with a loss of points for every minute (or portion thereof).  Courses will close at 1 pm and control retrieval will begin.

Maps:  Maps will be provided to all participants at the event site.

Schedule:

  • 8:45 am: Free beginners’ clinic starts.  Please arrive 15 minutes early if you wish to attend.
  • 9:00-10:55 am: Check in.
  • 9:00 am: First chance to start.
  • 11:00 am: Last chance to start.
  • 1:00 pm: Courses close.

Registration:  Pre-registration is required in order to keep an eye on crowd size and prepare the right number of maps.  See the "Fees" section below for information on coupon codes to use for member and junior pricing.  Everyone must register as an individual even if you plan on going as a team.  Registration closes December 30th at 10:00 am.

Also, it's time to renew or sign up for Tucson Orienteering Club (TSN) membership, which will provide a discount for events throughout the year.
