About the Event

This will probably be our last cool weather event of the year, so don’t miss out.

Location: Reid Park is in midtown at the corner of 22nd and Country Club, west of the Zoo and Hi Corbett baseball field. The park is mostly open grassy parkland with ball fields, picnic areas, ponds, ramadas, playgrounds, etc. There are bathrooms and water fountains.

Courses:

  • Sprint Courses: There will be two sprint courses, each about 3km. You can do one, stop and rest, then do the other.
  • Explorer Course: You will get a Score-O map with all the controls. Go to as many or as few controls as you wish. You will get one point for each control you visit. This course is suitable for novices or those who want to take their time.

Intermediate Training:  There will be a 100 meter route laid out near the start so you can verify your pace count. Also, you can go on a control retrieval map hike with an experienced orienteer and learn various navigation strategies.

Maps:  1/4000 scale. Maps will be provided to all participants at the event site.

Schedule:

  • 7:45 Check-in starts. Free beginners’ clinic starts.  Arrive 15 minutes early if you wish to attend.
  • 8:00 First chance to start.
  • 9:30 Last chance to start.
  • 10:30 Map hikes assemble and head out to retrieve controls.
  • 11:00 Courses close and first controls are picked up.

Registration:  Pre-registration is required in order to keep an eye on crowd size and prepare the right number of maps.  Everyone must register as an individual even if you plan on going as a team. See who has already signed up.  Registration closes at noon, Friday March 29.

Directions and Parking:  From Country Club or Randolph Way, turn onto E Camino Campestre and drive to the northeast park entrance, on the west side of Hi Corbett field. Look for O signs. We will be at the picnic tables west of ramada 31 (32.213969, -110.921696).  Park in the lot adjacent to the picnic tables or along the street.

What to Bring:

  • Safety whistle is required (whistles can be purchased on site for $1)
  • Compass (compass can be rented on site for $1)
  • Water (and snacks if desired)
  • Watch or phone (so you can finish on time)

E-punch:  This event uses e-punching for timing and punch verification. We'll show you how to use it if you've never done it before and we'll have e-punch sticks for rent ($2) if you do not have your own.

Fees:

  • Adults: $8 (member), $12 (non-member)
  • Juniors (11-20): $6
  • Kids (0-10): free w/adult

Coupon Codes to use at Registration:

  • "AZClub" for adult members of TSN (Tucson) or GPHXO (Phoenix)
  • "Junior" for juniors 11-20.
  • "KID" for children 10 and under (please register even though it's free—we need a headcount and a waiver for each participant).

Friend-For-Free: Tucson Orienteering Club (TSN) members may bring one qualified guest for free to this event.  To qualify, the guest must (1) never have attended a TSN or other OUSA club event before, (2) pre-register for this event, and (3) accompany the member to the event. To get this one-time free entry, the guest should use coupon code "FRIEND" when they register and mention the member's name in the "notes for the registrar" section.

Youth Participants: All participants under 18 must provide a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian. For details see our Instructions for Minors.  These instructions are for anyone who will be bringing a minor child under 18 to an event.

Volunteer to Help at Event: We can always use volunteer help at the event. Don’t worry if you haven’t volunteered before, we can show you. You can volunteer when registering online. Or you can volunteer here, and your message will be forwarded to the meet director.

Safety Information: To ensure that all are safe, everyone, whether finished with the course or not, must check in formally at Start/Finish before courses close and before leaving the event site.
