Navigation

  • The idea of a MapRun course is to be as close as possible to orienteering with an e-punch. All navigating should be done with your paper map. The phone does not show your location so cannot be used for navigating. The phone is merely a way to get a beep and record your punch.

Start

  • In MapRun, select the event by name

  • Once the event is loaded, and you are ready, go to Start. Once it beeps your time begins.

Premature Start

  • If you unintentionally pass near the start and your time starts, don’t worry. Simply exit the app and press start only when you are actually ready to begin.

Phone Screen

  • Most phone screens must be visible for MapRun to record a control. If so, you have the following choices:

    1. Get a wrist holder for your phone and keep the screen visible for the whole run.

    2. Allow the screen to be off and in your pocket, then turn the screen on as you near the control.

    3. Carry phone in hand with screen visible. (Not recommended, very awkward holding both phone and map.)

  • I think some phones will record the beep even when the screen is off. If so, you can keep it in your pocket.

Failure to Beep

  • You will get a beep to let you know you are within 10 meters. Controls may "punch" at slightly different proximity for different runners.

  • If it doesn’t beep at 10 meters, do the following:

    1. verify that your phone screen is visible

    2. look at screen and see if the control has "punched" (turned from red to green)

    3. if not, continue the remaining 10 meters to the control feature and check again

  • Sometimes the phone will not beep, but the control punches ok. That is a glitch in the phone.

Premature Finish

  • Do not take a route that passes within 20 meters of the finish until you are actually finished. Your course ends when you get a beep at the finish control.

  • If you unintentionally get a finish punch you have two options:

    1. Start the course over.

    2. Complete your run and record your time manually with the meet director.

Scoring and Results

  • Results are automatically uploaded to the MapRun server if you are connected when finished.

  • Otherwise, results can be manually uploaded to MapRun server, and to Strava, or emailed as a .gpx file.

  • Results will be published on our club’s website within a week.
