Sunday, March 12th was a beautiful day to orienteer. The weather was perfect, clear and cool, and the participants were astoundingly convivial.
The map was an aerial photograph developed by Jeff Brucker. The clue sheet was developed by Jeff Brucker. Half the control locations were developed by Jeff Brucker. So this meet started out as my big idea, but I was glad to share the acclaim and more than half of the work with Brucker. My thanks also to the many who offered to help retrieve controls.
Participants probably figured out that this map was across the street from my house, the convenient prerogative of course setters.
Eleven family groups, bound by DNA or marriage, were represented at the event - making up more than half of the participants.
A bicycle category was added at the last minute. Since this was a midtown location, many participants were able to bike to the start point. Too bad the course setters didn't notice that no bikes were allowed on the Treat Avenue walkway which runs right down the middle of the map. Sorry! Some orienteers found it difficult to distinguish between property boundaries and walkable ways. Again, sorry!
I like to use the Broadmoor neighborhood for street-Os for its interesting combination of non-grid streets and walkways with lots of differences between the houses. Perhaps you live in a non-grid neighborhood or perhaps you are familiar with a non-grid neighborhood. Perhaps you would like to have another Street-O in a non-grid neighborhood. Contact the club through the website. We would be happy to guide you through the simple mapmaking, course setting or meet direction required for one of these very amusing events.
