The morning dawned to a beautiful blue sky, comfortable temperatures, and 39 happy people heading out on the Lakeside Park Street-O. Two more who were not able to orienteer today picked up their maps and clue sheets to tackle the course at their later convenience.
There was a tight race in the foot category, with Jeff Coker squeaking past Isaac Pemienta for 1st place in 45 minutes. Billie Lubis handily won the bike category in the Bike category in 40 minutes. One team did not feel well after a few controls, so they returned for their car and finished that way. They garnered a brownie point for ingenuity and determination, and earned their own "car" category at the bottom of the results.
There was a minor issue with the control at the disc golf tee-pad marked hole #18. The day before our orienteering event, the disc golf people posted a temporary sign designating that tee pad as hole #17 for an event this weekend. So those were both correct answers for that control, with everyone who went there figuring it out eventually.
Rick Eastman came from Phoenix to try out our park/street-o and liked it so much he plans to confer with Jeff Brucker for tips on organizing similar events in Phoenix.
First-time orienteers appeared hooked and are already planning to return for more. At least one participant was temporarily chased by a happy dog and two happy goats before their owner came running out to catch them. A fun time was had by all. Thanks to Jeff Brucker for setting a great course.
