Thirty-eight orienteers (17 individuals and 9 teams) enjoyed themselves in the Garden District on Sunday morning. Participants included 14 Garden District residents, most of them attending their very first orienteering event. The local novices saw their neighborhood from a new perspective, and happily found their way back to the start/finish in the allotted time.
Orienteers that completed the course walked, ran, or biked 4 miles. It was a tight race in the foot category: 4 finished in under 50 minutes. Marcy Beard carried the lead just ahead of John Beard, Alan Craig, and Isaac Pimienta. James and Jeff Rockow from Phoenix took first place in the bike category.
Participants commented on the artsy homes and yards, and the comfortable autumn weather. A local coyote made a guest appearance on the course.
Thanks to Jeff Brucker for course setting, all the behind-the-scenes work, and his stewardship. Many thanks to Cathy Hoffman and Mary Adams for helping with registration and timing. Cathy and Mary had never attended an Orienteering event but they arrived on short notice, learned quickly, and described the experience as “fun”. I suspect we will see them again.
