Upwards of 40 orienteers braved the cool Tucson winter temperatures and blazing sunshine at Fort Lowell Park to run sprint courses set by Jeff Brucker. The Long course was 4.0km with 27 controls, and was the pick for most folks. Others opted for the Short course (the first 18 controls of the Long) or the choose-your-own-adventure Explorer option.
The Pimienta brothers of Mateo and Isaac were the fastest men on today's Long course, with Mateo taking a decisive lead in the family rivalry that I have just invented. Not far behind was the fastest woman today, Billie Lubis, several minutes ahead of the next two finishers, veterans Cristina Luis and Marcy Beard in their own tight race several minutes back.
The highlight of the morning was honoring course setter Jeff Brucker for his eternal dedication to the club. Jeff has been a prominent volunteer and board member for several decades, and especially over the past three years as the club has worked to rebuild. Where Jeff does the most work is on the technical side, with course setting, vetting, and mentoring new course setters. The club has held about 40 events since the beginning of 2021, and Jeff has been the course setter, vetter, or mentor for half of them! Today we presented Jeff Brucker with the Best Volunteer Ever award. Along with a certificate, Jeff was also presented with a Tucson Orienteering Club top and pants, as a small token of appreciation for all his hard work. Thank you, Jeff!
Other volunteers today: Peg Davis taught an intermediate clinic on compass use while I taught the beginner clinic, both attended by healthy crowds. Alan Craig, Billie Lubis, Heather McLean, Annie King, and Melissa Trout all took turns at registration, download, or start. Billie Lubis, Marcy Beard, John Beard, Annie King, Alan Craig, Wayne Lubis, Betsy Lubis, Alexandre Savine all helped to pick up controls, which made for a very quick cleanup.
