It was a good turnout at Ironwood on Saturday, with over 50 orienteers enduring the windy conditions to traipse through cholla, saguaro, and barrel cactuses. Cristina Luis set several great courses. I overheard several orienteers describing the yellow course as “beginner friendly” and the advanced course as “not easy”. Cristina, you nailed it. Those of us on the advanced course also got a lot of fun practice climbing into, out of, and through washes. I wish everyone good luck in removing all the cactus spines/glochids that you unintentionally brought home with you.
The team of Jirina and Jenna Renger led the orienteers on the yellow course, followed closely by Shelby Janssen and Christina Dinh. Tom Boucher won the orange course, narrowly beating Annie King. The winners of the advanced courses were Mark Yungbluth and Jeff Brodsky on the long and short, respectively.
Special shoutout to the volunteers: Wayne Lubis, who was deputized into the director role during the latter half of the meet; Annie King, starter and rock finder extraordinaire; Peg Davis and Cristina Luis for teaching the clinics; Alastair and Alan for being on registration table standby; and Wayne, Betsy, Cristina, Joan, Isaac, Mateo, and Robbey for control retrieval. If I forgot to mention your name, I owe you some cranberry date bars at the next orienteering meet.
How do we measure a successful event? No one was lost in the desert (for too long), all dropped e-punches were recovered, and the sheriff drove by and gave us a friendly wave. It was a lovely way to cap off orienteering for 2023. Thanks for joining us, hope to see you in the new year!
