Beautiful weather conditions greeted over 50 orienteers who completed either a Yellow Course, Peg Race or Explorer Course. Prior to heading out on the courses, newcomers to navigators attended a Beginner’s Clinic, led by Peg Davis. For those more advanced with navigation skills, an Intermediate Clinic was presented by Cristina Luis.
Yellow Course orienteers headed out in search of controls located around the park, with winner Lauren Mosley finishing in 25:58. All Yellow competitors cleared the course in under an hour.
The featured Peg Race, where ‘pegs’ (clothespins) greeted the quicker orienteers, required the faster orienteers to run further and locate additional controls, in essence handicapping the faster runners. A very close race finish had Billie Lubis just edging out Jeff Coker for the win.
Explorers went out into the desert to locate as many controls as possible. Nancy Coker came into the finish having found 16 controls in just over 35 minutes.
These events would not be possible without the support of volunteers and we wish to acknowledge their support. Melissa Trout assisted with the registration desk, handing out E-punches and checking in orienteers. Control retrieval was accomplished by Alan Craig, Shelby Janssen, Christina Dinh, Peter Wentzel, Anna King and Gavin Boughner. Beginner’s Clinic was conducted by Peg Davis and the Intermediate Clinic by Cristina Luis. Cristina Luis was the course setter and Yvonne Poe the Meet Director.
Immediately following the navigation events, the Tucson Orienteering Club held the annual General Membership Meeting and election of Board members.
