It was a cold, snowy morning in the Santa Rita mountains near Kentucky Camp. The icy slush was piling up on Route 83… oh, wait. That was last week.

Thanks for bearing with us and coming out for the rescheduled event on Saturday, February 17th! The weather was downright balmy compared to the week prior, although it was still nice to have the option of tea or hot chocolate provided by Sasha Savine.

Isaac Pimienta set four great courses in the beautiful rough open land with scattered trees of the Santa Rita foothills, aided by Jeff Brucker as vetter and course consultant. We heard many compliments about the courses from orienteers of all levels. First place on the yellow course was taken by Lauren Mosely. First place on the orange course went to Jirina Renger. Annie King was first place on the short advanced course, while John Beard just edged out Cristina Luis for first on long advanced. Great job to them and to everyone who orienteered with us yesterday!

We’d like to thank all the volunteers who helped out with the event: Shelby Janssen, Richard Holloway, and Christina Dinh for registration; Peg Davis for the beginners clinic; Cristina L. for route clinics at the start; and Isaac, Marcy and John Beard, Billie, Shelby, Christina D., and Richard for control pickup yesterday. Additionally, the Jeffs (Brucker and Brodsky) picked up controls last weekend, and Jeff and Nancy Coker dealt with notifying participants of the postponement whilst the meet directors (with spotty cell service) played in the snow.

Lastly, thank you for your support of the University of Arizona Orienteering Team as we prepare to compete at OUSA Junior Nationals in eastern Washington from March 22-24, 2024.
