Gorgeous weather greeted over 50 orienteers for the 90-minute Score O held December 28th. It was great to see so many new runners, out-of-town visitors and old friends. Alan Craig and Annie King assisted with registration and the timing table, getting everything set up under the shade of the centuries old Ironwood tree, before venturing out on the course.
Peg Davis gave an excellent beginners clinic to a dozen newcomers prior to the start of the event. Brad Poe set a beginner-friendly course that allowed more experienced orienteers the opportunity to run through the desert in a race to collect all 18 controls. Jeff Coker (M1) set the bar high, clearing the course in just over 58 minutes! Over the next 25 minutes another 5 orienteers would follow, also having collected all 18 controls. Team Stephen Woodall/Angela Greynolds (T1) and Marcy Beard (F1) placed first in their respective divisions.
The most picturesque control on the course was #33, set in a small slot canyon in the hills. Nancy Coker found herself in a sticky situation, having introduced herself to some Cholla. Jeff Coker, Gregg Townsend and Brad Poe all responded to assist in removing the hitchhiker from Nancy's leg.
Post event, controls were picked up by Jeff Brodsky, Marcy Beard, Pete Wentzel, Alexandre Savine and Brad Poe.
