With much of the club’s energy focused on the North American Championships in December, this spring is the first without a Southwest Spring Week in many years. Instead, the club has several single weekends of quality orienteering, spreading out the work and keeping it on weekends. This weekend at Catalina State Park was the first of them, with Classic courses on Saturday designed by Alan Craig, and a Cholla Chaser on Sunday designed by Jeff Brucker.
Both days orienteers were treated to fine February weather and challenging orienteering! Unfortunately, on Saturday runners on the Brown and Green courses had one control (130) which was misplaced, negatively affecting a lot of runners. Keep that in mind as you check the results and splits for those courses. (The affected control was Control 8 on Brown and Control 13 on Green.)
On Saturday, Annie Martin, Hana Myers, Alan Craig, Lukas Luis, Melissa Trout, and Danny O’Callaghan all pitched in with various registration, starts, and timing tasks. The day’s large team of control retrievers: Rick Schnell, Andrei Karpov, Sasha Savine, Alastair Laing, Wayne Cottrell, Greg Krasa and Buffy, and Ron Birks.
Jeff Brucker had a lot of assistance in setting out controls, from Annie Martin, Alan Craig, Joel Norby, and Johanna O'Dell. The latter two are newer to orienteering and were mentored by the former. Gregg Townsend led the walk to the start and briefed competitors, before then heading out on his own course. It’s fun to see so many people pitching in to make an event happen!
In addition to the technical assistance on Sunday, Hana Myers, Alan Craig, Annie Martin, and Melissa Trout held down the fort for check-in and timing. Snacks were carefully curated again by Lukas Luis. Sunday’s team of control retrievers: Pete Wentzel, John Beard, Joan D’Alonzo, Jeff Brodsky, Brooke Mann, Andrei Karpov, and Kathy Dodd.
