What's better than orienteering in Redington Pass two days in a row? Driving up Redington Road to do it! About 50 orienteers did just that this weekend, for two days of long courses in the beautiful, rugged terrain sitting between the Santa Catalina and Rincon Mountains.
Saturday's courses were long enough to make sure everyone spent more time orienteering than driving to get to the event from Tucson, with most competitors out for more than two hours. Jeff Coker and Marcy Beard topped the Long Advanced, while Charlie Shabazian and Nancy Coker were fastest on the Short Advanced.
Sunday's courses were a little less rugged. Andrei Karpov and Anna Campbell led the Long Advanced course (Anna beating her dad Jon by over 11 minutes for family bragging rights), while David Enger and Jennifer Castelluccio were the fastest man and woman, respectively, on the Short Advanced.
In addition to the winners, big kudos go to the Osborn boys, aged 9 and 12, who accompanied their dad on the Long Advanced course both days.
Saturday's event could not have happened without a great crew of folks helping out. Thanks to course setter Pete Wentzel for treating everyone to a tour of the tough terrain; Sue Wenberg and Kathy Dodd for handling the morning rush at registration and start; Jeff Brodsky for handling downloads and delivering a Norwegian delicacy to the event director (fresh from Norway!); Brooke Mann, Andrei Karpov, Jon and Anna Campbell, and John and Marcy Beard for control retrieval; the Osborn family for control retrieval management; and Katy and baby Arlo for helping to hang controls for the next day.
Sunday, too, had many hands making light work. Thanks to Jon and Anna Campbell, Andrei Karpov, and Pete Wentzel for help with control retrieval; and Sasha Savine and Sue Wenberg with cleanup and packing up duties.
