About the Event
Location: Catalina State Park. Please note that day use fees for the park are now $20 for vehicles with 2-4 people and $10 for vehicles with 1 person.
Camping: Camping (already reserved, $25/night/vehicle paid upon arrival) is available for participants at the Flycatcher Group site Friday and Saturday nights.
Saturday Classic Courses:
Yellow (Novice) – Great place to start for beginner to intermediate, 2.4k, 35 m climb
Brown (Short Advanced) – 2.7k, 95 m climb
Green (Medium Advanced) – 4.2k, 110 m climb
Red (Long Advanced) – 7.1k, 90 m climb (very sandy areas will be visited as well)
Explorer – Visit as many controls as you like in any order. For Saturday, there will be a total of 42 controls with a 3 hour time limit. Anyone who mispunches or does not finish on a regular course will be put in this category for the results.
Sunday Courses:
Cholla Chaser: This will be a handicap event based on age group, mostly at an intermediate level, with some advanced controls. Total combined distance will range from 3.6km to 6.5km based on age and sex. There will be two sections to the event. The first section, the “Box”, will have a mass start. You will need to visit the required number of controls for your age group. The controls are scattered, and you can go in any order, similar to a score-o. Once you finish with the box section, you begin the second section, the “Chase”. It is a normal point-to-point course.
Yellow (Novice) The Yellow course takes you off of the trails but follows helpful linear features, is a good course for the beginning adult, and is typically 2-4 km long.
Explorer: You can go to any number of controls, in any order. Also, if you start one of the other courses and do not go to all the controls, you will automatically be put on the Explorer course.
Control Retrieval: After courses close, we still need to collect all the controls. This is a great opportunity to work on your navigation skills at a leisurely pace. If you are new or want to get some tips, you can tag along with a more experienced orienteer.
Maps: Paper maps will be provided.
Livelox: If you have a GPS app or watch, you can upload your track to Livelox (Saturday and Sunday) so you can see your route and compare it to others. Click the +Add Route and follow the instructions.
