About the Event

Location, Directions, and Parking:  Redington Pass Trailhead on Redington Rd with parking/carpooling from Udall Park!

The road to this event is rough and not recommended for low clearance vehicles. It’s possible to do in a sedan if you are confident and drive slowly, but it’s a lot easier in a higher clearance vehicle. We want everyone to be able to attend, regardless of vehicle and comfort level driving on unpaved roads. Therefore, we ask that everyone who needs a ride or can offer a ride meet in the northeasternmost parking lot at Udall Park between 8:15 am and 8:30 am to form carpools and get everyone to the event from there. The driving time from Udall Park to the trailhead is 40-60 min.

The final parking location for this event is at the Redington Pass Trailhead, which is an OHV parking lot off of Redington Rd. The final 8 miles are unpaved with sections that are difficult to drive.

Toilets: There is a pit toilet at the parking area but it is in very poor condition. You are welcome to use nature, or the nice, new Forest Service vault toilet in the Middle Tanque Verde Falls Recreation Area toilet just about a mile after the paved road ends. We would love to have a clean porta-potty for you but due to the remote location it is cost-prohibitive for a local event.

Courses:  Both days will feature Long Advanced (6-8km), Short Advanced (3-4km), Novice (2-3km), and Explorer (score) courses. Note that, due to the remote nature of the venue, the Novice course will be the same both days. This also means there will be some overlap in the Explorer course both days.

Maps:  Maps printed on waterproof paper will be provided to all participants at the event site. Map scales TBD, long courses at 1:10,000, shorter perhaps at 1:7500.

Livelox: If you have a GPS app or watch, you can upload your track to Livelox (Saturday and Sunday) after this event so you can see your route and compare it to others. Click +Add Route and follow the instructions.

Schedule:

  • 9:45 am Free beginners’ clinic starts.  Please arrive 15 minutes early if you wish to attend. (Request with a comment in registration)

  • 9:45 am Free intermediate clinic. (Request with a comment in registration)

  • 9:30 am Check in begins

  • 10:00 am First chance to start.

  • 11:30 am Last chance to start.

  • 2:00 pm Courses close.

Camping: Dry camping is available around the parking lot on Redington Rd. This is totally unsupported camping on Forest Service land. No running water. The pit toilet is in bad shape, so please bring what you need (small shovel) to responsibly use nature as your bathroom.

Registration:  Pre-registration is required in order to keep an eye on crowd size and prepare the right number of maps.  See the "Fees" section below for member's and junior's discounts.  Everyone must register as an individual even if you plan on going as a team.  See who has already signed up. Registration closes at noon on Friday, March 6th.
