Isabella Lee Trailhead, 1701 N Bonanza, Tucson, AZ 85715, USA

About the Event

Come for the debut of this brand-new map. It is in a beautiful nature preserve along the Tanque Verde Wash in northeast Tucson.

Location:   Isabella Lee Nature Preserve is at the confluence of Tanque Verde Wash and Agua Caliente Wash. It has a complex assortment of trails and small washes in a mesquite “bosque”, or riparian forest.

Courses:  2 Hour Score-O You can go as fast or as slow as you want, and get as many controls as you want, as long as you are finished in 2 hours. I figure faster runners will take under 40 minutes to cover the 3.5 km needed to get them all. If you plan on walking the whole 2 hours, please get there early so you can finish well before the course closes.

Extended Course

If you cannot make it on November 8th, no problem. The course will remain open until November 15th. Register normally, then elect the “After Nov 8” when asked.

Maps:  Paper maps will be provided to all participants at the event site. If you elect to do the course after Nov 8, you will be sent a link to the map Pdf, which you can print yourself.

MapRun Controls:  We will be using the MapRun phone app for timing and punch verification, instead of control flags and epunches. You will need to download the MapRun app to your iOS or Android phone before the event, but if you forget we can show you how on-site. For an explaination of MapRun, see the short video here. There will be a volunteer at the event who will show you how to use MapRun if you've never done it before.

Schedule:

  • At home download the latest version of MapRun

  • 7:00 AM Check in.

  • 7:00 AM First chance to start.

  • 8:30 AM Last chance to start.

  • 10:30 AM Courses close.

Registration: Preregistration is required in order to keep an eye on crowd size and prepare the right number of maps. Everyone must register as an individual even if you plan on going as a team. Pre-registration deadline is Friday November 7 at 3pm. Register here.   See who has already signed up.

Fees:

  • Adults and Juniors (11 and up): $5

  • Kids (0-10): Free with adult. When registering, use coupon code "Kid" (please register even though it's free—we need a headcount and a waiver for each participant).

Directions and Parking:  We will meet at the Isabella Lee Trailhead at 1701 N Bonanza. It is about ½ mile west of Houghton Road and ½ mile south of Tanque Verde Road. Google maps shows the correct location 32.242805, -110.781262 . However the google search page gives a random address on Wrightstown Road, which is incorrect.

What to Bring:

  • iOS or Android Smartphone, or Garmin watch, with MapRun installed

  • Safety whistle is required (whistles can be purchased on site for $1)

  • Compass (compass can be rented on site for $1)

  • Water (and snacks if desired)

Youth Participants: All participants under 18 must provide a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian. For details see our Instructions for Minors.  These instructions are for anyone who will be bringing a minor child under 18 to an event.

Volunteer Greeter Needed: I need an experienced volunteer to help newcomers with maprun or other orienteering questions. If you can do this, please show up early to help. You can then go out on the course.

Other Safety Information: To ensure that all are safe, everyone, whether finished with the course or not, must check in formally at Finish before courses close and before leaving the event site.
