The Lost One Standing is a Sky Pilots creation, an orienteering version of a Last One Standing backyard ultra.

Our version is a 12-hour event with 6 courses.

Everyone starts in the Blue category.  There will be a Blue mass start every 2 hours for all participants in this category. If you complete each course in less than 2 hours, you remain in Blue and you will start another (different) course at the 2-hour mark. Anyone finishing a course in more than 2 hours will switch to the Brown category.  In Brown you can start another course whenever you are ready. You may complete each course only once, and you can choose what order to do them. How many courses can you complete within 12 hours?

We are also offering a 4-hour rogaine using all of the controls, visiting as many as you like in any order (1 point per control).

Location, Directions, and Parking:  South of Tucson near route 83, Apache Springs Trailhead, around 5000 ft elevation. See location map. Travel on I-10 east from Tucson. Take exit 281 and go south on route 83 for 21 miles. Not far past milepost 38, turn right on Gardner Canyon Road (which is dirt). After 4.5 miles on the dirt road, veer right at the split. Gardner Canyon trailhead parking and our event will be on the right after another 1.1 miles.

Please carpool to the event if possible.

Camping: You are welcome to boondock in the area on Friday and Saturday nights. Dispersed camping is available within 2-3 miles of the event site.

Courses:  The 12-hour Lost One Standing event has 6 different point-to-point courses with up to 12 controls each. You must locate all controls in the correct order for the course to count. See above for Blue/Brown category details.

Awards: We are scoring Blue/Brown in the same manner as Sky Pilots. Most competitors will be listed in both categories. Awards are as follows: Last One Standing for both genders in Blue, Assist (2nd place in Blue), and both genders in Brown (after the Blue award winners are removed from the Brown standings).

Tiebreakers:

  • A tiebreaker will be used for the Blue awards if more than one person completes the same number of Blue courses.

  • Tiebreaker = Time on course (Electronic Punch) for the last course completed.

  • Ties will be allowed in Brown, based on total number of courses completed within 12 hours.

Overtime: Any courses completed after 10:00 PM will not count. Returning to the finish line after 10:15 pm may result in disqualification at the discretion of the race director (please don't make us search for you)

The 4-hour Rogaine uses all of the controls. Collect as many controls as you can, in any order, in up to 4 hours. Each control is worth 1 point. Ties will be broken by finish time. Over time penalty: 1 point subtracted per full minute late over 4 hours (59 second grace period).

There is no "Start" punch for the mass starts (Blue category and 4-hour Rogaine). You will use the "Start" punch for Brown category starts (OK to start any time other than the mass starts). Be sure to Clear and Check after downloading each course and before starting another course (Blue and Brown categories).

Maps:  All maps are 1:10000 scale and will be printed on waterproof Teslin paper. The 12-hour Lost One Standing will have 6 maps (5 courses at 8.5" x 11" each and 1 course at 11" x 17"). The 4-hour Rogaine will have one 2-sided map at 11" x 17". Map bags will not be handed out.

What to Bring:

  • Safety whistle is required (whistles can be purchased on site for $1)

  • Compass (compass can be rented on site for $1)

  • Water to carry on the course (the hash house will have a limited supply; there are no water drops on the course)

  • Snacks if desired

  • Watch or phone (so you can finish on time; navigation by electronics of any kind is not allowed)

  • Headlamp/flashlight for last 1-2 courses of the 12-hour Lost One Standing

  • Leg covering strongly suggested (catclaw is present at varying densities around the course)

  • Arm covering might also be appreciated

  • Tweezers (in case of contact with cholla)

  • Table/chairs (if you might want them for course planning and eating)

  • Map case (if you want to use one - maps will be printed on waterproof Teslin paper)

E-punch:  This event uses e-punching for timing and punch verification. We'll show you how to use it if you've never done it before and we'll have e-punch sticks for rent ($2) if you do not have your own.

Note: The Rogaine will have over 50 controls available, so if you anticipate visiting a large number of them you should ensure your E-punch will handle that many (E-punch rentals are SI-8 that hold 30).

Youth Participants: All participants under 18 must provide a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian. For details see our Instructions for Minors.  These instructions are for anyone who will be bringing a minor child under 18 to an event.

Volunteer to Help at Event: We can always use volunteer help at the event.  If you are doing the 4-hour event, let us know if you have time before or afterward. Control retrieval on Sunday would also be very helpful. Don’t worry if you haven’t volunteered before, we can show you. You can volunteer when registering online. Or you can volunteer here, and your message will be forwarded to the meet director.

Safety Information: To ensure that all are safe, everyone, whether finished with the course or not, must check in formally at Start/Finish before courses close and before leaving the event site.
