About the Event

The Lost One Standing is a Sky Pilots creation, an orienteering version of a Last One Standing backyard ultra.

Our version is a 12-hour event with 6 courses.

Everyone starts in the Blue category.  There will be a Blue mass start every 2 hours for all participants in this category. If you complete each course in less than 2 hours, you remain in Blue and you will start another (different) course at the 2-hour mark. Anyone finishing a course in more than 2 hours will switch to the Brown category.  In Brown you can start another course whenever you are ready. You may complete each course only once, and you can choose what order to do them. The winner (one in each category, Blue and Brown) will be the person who completes the most courses within 12 hours. Tiebreakers TDB. More details to follow.

We are also offering a 4-hour rogaine using all of the controls, visiting as many as you like in any order (1 point per control).

Location:  South of Tucson near route 83, Apache Springs Trailhead, around 5000 ft elevation. See location map.

Camping: You are welcome to boondock in the area on Friday and Saturday nights. Dispersed camping is available within 2-3 miles of the event site.

Courses:  The 12-hour Lost One Standing event has 6 different point-to-point courses with up to 12 controls each. You must locate all controls in the correct order for the course to count. See above for Blue/Brown category details.

Tiebreaker: If multiple competitors complete the same number of courses, the winner will be determined by the lowest total time (Electronic Punch) for all completed courses.

Overtime: Any courses completed after 10:00 PM will not count. Returning to the finish line after 10:15 pm may result in disqualification at the discretion of the race director (please don't make us search for you)

The 4-hour Rogaine uses all of the controls. Collect as many controls as you can, in any order, in up to 4 hours. Each control is worth 1 point. Over time penalty: 1 point subtracted per full minute late over 4 hours (59 second grace period).

There is no "Start" punch for the mass starts (Blue category and 4-hour Rogaine). You will use the "Start" punch for Brown category starts (OK to start any time other than the mass starts). Be sure to Clear and Check after downloading each course and before starting another course (Blue and Brown categories).

Maps:  All maps are 1:10000 scale and will be printed on waterproof paper. The 12-hour Lost One Standing will have 6 maps (sizes TBD). The 4-hour Rogaine will have 2 pages at 11" x 17" each. One 11" x 17" map bag will be available per person, upon request.

Registration:  Preregistration is required in order to keep an eye on crowd size and prepare the right number of maps. You are not required to be an OUSA member in order to register; you can "Enter Data Manually". Everyone must register as an individual even if you plan on going as a team. Pre-registration deadline is Sunday March 29 at 11 pm. See who has signed up.

Directions and Parking:  Details to be provided later.

What to Bring:

  • Safety whistle is required (whistles can be purchased on site for $1)

  • Compass (compass can be rented on site for $1)

  • Water (and snacks if desired)

  • Watch or phone (so you can finish on time)

  • Headlamp/flashlight for last 1-2 courses of the 12-hour Lost One Standing

  • Leg and arm covering suggested (catclaw is present at varying densities around the course)

E-punch:  This event uses e-punching for timing and punch verification. We'll show you how to use it if you've never done it before and we'll have e-punch sticks for rent ($2) if you do not have your own.

Note: The Rogaine will have over 50 controls available, so if you anticipate visiting a large number of them you should ensure your E-punch will handle that many (E-punch rentals are SI-8 that hold 30).

Volunteer to Help at Event: We can always use volunteer help at the event.  If you are doing the 4-hour event, let us know if you have time before or afterward. Control retrieval on Sunday would also be very helpful. Don’t worry if you haven’t volunteered before, we can show you. You can volunteer when registering online. Or you can volunteer here, and your message will be forwarded to the meet director.

Safety Information: To ensure that all are safe, everyone, whether finished with the course or not, must check in formally at Start/Finish before courses close and before leaving the event site.
