Udall Park

Come to Udall Park for the debut of this brand-new map. Cristina Luis downloaded the satellite images, and I did the drawing and field checking. The park is about 60% desert, including an area of spurs and re-entrants in the far southwest, and an extensive network of trails in mostly flat creosote and mesquite desert. The remaining 40% is developed parkland with ball fields, walking paths, etc.

Location:  Udall Park.

Courses:  Yellow 2.5km (no climb) and Green 4.2km (very little climb).

MapRun Controls:  There will be no physical control flags or epunches. This event uses the MapRun phone app for timing and punch verification. When you get within 15 meters of the control feature, your phone will vibrate/beep. That’s it. We recommend that you download the MapRun app to your iOS or Android phone before the event, but if you forget we can show you how on-site. Here is a short video explaining MapRun. (the video is for the older version MapRun6, but the new version MapRun7 works the same) There will be volunteers at the event who will show you how to use MapRun if you've never done it before.

Extended Course

If you cannot make it on Jul 12th, no problem. The course will remain open until July 27th. Register normally, then elect “Extended Course” when asked. Also leave a note to the registrar that you will run the course after July 12th. You will be sent an email with a link to the map which you can print yourself.

Phone Holder for Wrist Recommended: While mapping the park and setting the course, I used my GPS logger and MapRun extensively. I got tired of holding my phone in my hand, so I purchased a phone holder for my wrist so I would have my hands free. Highly recommended.

Maps:  Paper maps will be provided to all participants at the event site.

Schedule:

• At home download the latest version of MapRun

• 7:00 AM Check in.

• 7:00 AM First chance to start.

• 8:00 AM Last chance to start.

• 9:30 AM Courses close.

Registration:  Preregistration is required in order to keep an eye on crowd size and prepare the right number of maps.  Everyone must register as an individual even if you plan on going as a team. See who has already signed up.

What to Bring:

• iOS or Android Smartphone, or Garmin watch

• Safety whistle is required (whistles can be purchased on site for $1)

• Compass (compass can be rented on site for $1)

• Water (and snacks if desired)

• Adults: $5

• Juniors (11-20): $5

• Kids (0-10): free w/adult

Youth Participants: All participants under 18 must provide a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian. For details see our Instructions for Minors.  These instructions are for anyone who will be bringing a minor child under 18 to an event.

Other Safety Information: To ensure that all are safe, everyone, whether finished with the course or not, must check in formally at Start/Finish before courses close and before leaving the event site.
